The Skincare Myths We Hear Every Week

Running a skincare shop is a bit like being a quiet confessional.

People lean in. They tell us what they’ve been told (often via social media), what they’ve tried, what didn’t work, and what they’re now afraid to touch. And more often than not, it’s not their skin that’s the problem. It’s the advice they've been following.

Here are a few skincare myths we hear every single week and what actually matters instead.

  1. “My skin is too sensitive for actives”

Sensitive skin is a real skin type - genetics, inflammation, rosacea, we see you.

What we also see a lot of, is self inflicted sensitivity – skin that has become reactive through over-use of exfoliants, layering too many actives, or not allowing enough recovery time.

In those cases, the answer isn’t to swear off actives forever. It’s to support the barrier first, simplify the routine, and then reintroduce actives slowly and intentionally, if and when the skin is ready.

Less frequency. Better support. Real results.

  1. “If it doesn’t tingle, it’s not doing anything”

Tingling is a sensation, not a performance review.

Healthy skin change happens quietly. Consistent exfoliation, barrier repair, and cell renewal don’t need to announce themselves with burning or redness. In fact, irritation often slows progress rather than speeding it up.

Comfort is not failure.

  1. “Natural skincare doesn’t work”

Poorly formulated skincare doesn’t work. Full stop.

Ingredients don’t fail because they’re botanical. They fail because of low concentrations, poor delivery, or mismatched routines. When formulation is thoughtful and dosage is right, botanical and bio-active ingredients can be incredibly effective.

Results come from formulation, not ideology.

  1. “Oils cause breakouts”

The wrong oil, used the wrong way, on the wrong skin can absolutely cause issues.

But well-chosen oils can regulate sebum, support the barrier, and calm inflammation. For many people, breakouts improve when the skin finally stops over-producing oil to compensate for dryness.

Context matters more than rules.

  1. “More products = better skin”

This one might be the most common.

Skin thrives on consistency, not constant change. Overloading routines often leads to sensitivity, congestion, and confusion about what’s actually helping.

A smaller, well-chosen routine used properly will almost always outperform a crowded shelf.

Great skincare isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing the right things, at the right time, for your skin. And if you’re ever unsure, that’s exactly why conversations matter more than trends.
